Foothill Nature Walks

We’re offering a series of 1-hour guided hikes starting at the Museum and moving up beyond the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, to explore the flora and fauna of the season with the experts: NHMU's Herbarium Collections Manager Allison Izaksonas and special guests from Red Butte Garden. 

The Foothill Nature Walk will start on the Booneville Shoreline trail and move into the surrounding hills behind the Museum. This is a beginner to intermediate level hike on rocky trail with simple inclines and some uneven footing. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. Not appropriate for strollers. 

Scheduled tour dates subject to change due to weather conditions.

Participants must download, print, complete, and return this waiver on the day of the walk. 

Summer Camp - LEGO Engineering, Session A

Partner Camp with Play-Well TEKnologies

Join us for a week of engineering bliss! Monday and Tuesday will find campers with Museum staff exploring roller coasters, bridges, and towers while taking part in several engineering challenges. Wednesday and Thursday will be spent with staff from Play-Well TEKnologies, building engineer-designed projects such as a space station, fire trucks and the Eiffel Tower using thousands of LEGO® parts! Please note that students will take apart all LEGO® creations at the end of the session and will not keep any of the LEGO® bricks.

On Wednesday and Thursday, join us outside at Red Butte Garden, investigating the Garden from the perspective of ants, raccoons, trees, and more.

We’ll explore soil science, investigate rocks and minerals, and create volcanoes and earthquakes. Wednesday and Thursday will be spent at Clark Planetarium with campers learning about the planets, stars, and constellations while enjoying other spaced-out projects and activities including an IMAX, Dome, and Science on a Sphere show.

Repository Agreements

The Natural History Museum of Utah (UMNH) serves as the State designated repository (Utah Administrative Code R807-1) for archaeological and paleontological collections acquired under permit from state lands in Utah. Additionally, UMNH reposits Federal collections. Criteria for determining whether the Museum will curate a collection are in the Museum’s formally adopted Collections Management Policy (CMP) and in compliance with Utah State law. Reposited materials will be curated in accordance with the Museum’s established CMP and applicable guidelines: Preparing Collections for Reposit. 

Your application will only be processed after all components are received: application, necessary CV(s), info on your firm’s last agreement, and payment.

Summer Camp - Art & Science of Color

Partner Camp with Visual Art Institute

Join us as we explore the intersection of art and science. Monday and Tuesday will have campers at the Visual Arts Institute engaging in diverse art forms like sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and painting. Campers will make their own modeling clay, understand sculpting tools, experiment with cyanotype photography, discover color combinations in printmaking, and even create creatures by studying animal skeletal structures. Wednesday and Thursday will be spent at NHMU exploring color through the lens of biology, chemistry, and physics. From learning about eyesight and understanding camouflage to finding out what colors absorb more heat, why Mars has a red-hued atmosphere, and why the sky turns red at sunset and sunrise—these are just a few of the questions we’ll investigate.

Utah is home to many amazing animals and ecosystems! On Monday and Tuesday, campers will spend time at the Natural History Museum of Utah, exploring ecosystems from around the world, like the everglades and the Himalayas, and learning how they connect to the ones in our own backyards, like the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains. On Wednesday and Thursday while at Utah’s Hogle Zoo, campers will explore Wild Utah!, the Zoo’s newest permanent area. This innovative space will provide campers an in-depth understanding of not only the animals, but also the creation of their habitats at the Zoo. Campers will come away with a deeper appreciation of, and stewardship for, Utah’s wildlife and world biomes.

Lasting structures like the pyramids, the Parthenon and Stone Hedge as well as baskets and textiles will also be on the docket.

A late-night snack will be next before heading off for a Museum-wide scavenger hunt. Then, unroll your sleeping bag as we watch a movie. The next morning, we’ll clean up our sleeping areas, enjoy a continental breakfast, and partake in a few more exciting activities before you leave at lunchtime, full of memories of your sleepover adventure!

The Natural History Museum of Utah cordially invites you to be a vendor at the 2024 Utah Food Festival on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Please enter a quantity of 1 below then fill out the vendor agreement and sign with your electronic signature, and ensure that you review the Vendor Checklist and Agreement for the event before agreeing to participate. Your vendor booth fee of $150 will be paid now as part of this registration. Once you submit the Vendor Checklist and Agreement and your payment, we will request proof of insurance via email. 

We hope you can join us and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Monday and Tuesday will be spent using a variety of materials and tools as campers investigate size and design while discovering which shapes make the strongest structures. Gumdrop towers, paper bridges, and straw rockets as well as roller coasters and marble mazes are all on the docket. On Wednesday and Thursday, it’ll be all about space science as campers put their scientific skills to the test. We’ll investigate the solar system, launch rockets, create models of the planets, explore stars and constellations, and enjoy other spaced-out projects and activities.

Summer Camp -The Science of Color & Art

Partner Camp with Visual Art Institute 

Join us as we explore the intersection of art and science. Monday and Tuesday will be spent at NHMU exploring color through the lens of biology, chemistry, and physics. From learning about eyesight and understanding camouflage to finding out what colors absorb more heat, why Mars has a red-hued atmosphere, and why the sky turns red at sunset and sunrise—these are just a few of the questions we’ll investigate. Wednesday and Thursday will have campers at the Visual Arts Institute engaging in diverse art forms like sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and painting. Campers will make their own modeling clay, understand sculpting tools, experiment with cyanotype photography, discover color combinations in printmaking, and even create creatures by studying animal skeletal structures.

Drop off and pick up takes place at NHMU on Monday and Tuesday and at the Visual Arts Institute on Wednesday and Thursday. No camp on Friday.

The Great Salt Lake is ours to discover! From birding in Farmington Bay to swimming with brine shrimp at Antelope Island, each day we will go on an outdoor field trip to explore Great Salt Lake’s unique ecosystem. Along the way, we will practice science and art to learn about migratory birds, water quality, geology, and environmental stewardship. We are curious, adventurous, and love being outside.

Drop off and pick up takes place at NHMU. Transportation to field trip locations is provided. No camp on Friday.

Summer Camp — SENSEsational Science

Our bodies do some amazing things! Each day campers will build upon their ‘monster bodies’ as they learn about each of the five senses—from mystery smells, ear anatomy, and taste tests to animal eyes and texture exploration. We’ll also find time to tour the Museum and create some great art. Come and SEE for yourself!

On Monday and Tuesday at NHMU, campers will explore the Museum using scientific tools and methods while investigating things like states of matter, constellations, rockets, ink chromatography, magnets, and more. On Wednesday and Thursday at Camp K, campers will explore the Utah foothills in Emigration Canyon. Topics will include the significance of plants and animals in the ecosystem and the non-living components of the interconnected network of ecology including water, soil, temperature, sunlight, pollution, and wind. In addition, they will participate in games and exciting outdoor experiences like hiking, fishing, swimming, and crafts.

Imaginative play, authentic specimens, and time spent outdoors will provide open-ended opportunities for active engagement in a safe environment. Summer Camp - Dinos Rock / Artful Science

This session runs Monday - Wednesday ONLY.

Join us for dinosaurs, rocks, and art! On Monday and Tuesday, campers will investigate dinosaurs and their Mesozoic world. We’ll explore rocks, minerals, and the processes that make up the Earth along with tours of the Paleontology Lab and Past Worlds Gallery. On Wednesday, we’ll explore art and science concepts. Flower dissection and petal painting, color scavenger hunts, bubble and soil art are all on the docket in this hands-on camp.

Summer Camp - Camp 'Ology'

‘Ology’ means ‘the study of’ and we will be doing just that at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Join us for 4 days of discovery as we discover what it means to be a biologist, anthropologist, geologist, and climatologist while also breaking down those fields into more specified titles like paleontologist. We’ll unpack the science with hands-on experiments and projects, Museum investigations and tours, chats with scientists and student guided inquiry.
